Point to La Pointe
Open Water Swim

2.1 mile swim on Lake Superior - August 1, 2020

Schedule

Friday
  • 2-10pm - Packet Pickup and Apparel Sales at Wild Rice Retreat.
    - Packet Pickup is from 2:00-10:00pm. All swimmers must pick up their own packet in person.
    - 2019 Point to La Pointe Apparel will be on sale! Don't hesitate to get yours, when it's gone, it's gone!
    - The Madeline Island Ferry Line will be pre-selling ferry tickets. We strongly encourage buying your tickets in advance. A pre-purchased ticket does not guarantee you a spot on a specific ferry, but it does let you skip the ticket line.
    - Wine Bar at Wild Rice Retreat - Small plates, beer and wine available for purchase (food available after 4).  Live, local music by Ric Gillman from approximately 6 - 9 pm.

If you're driving, Wild Rice Retreat is located just south of Bayfield. Turn towards the lake on Old San Rd and follow the signs and parking instructions.  If you're walking or biking, please be aware that the Brownstone Trail is damaged.  Slumping and erosion has occurred and the trail is completely gone in one area, leaving deep and gaping hole. To help keep people safe and prevent additional damage, Landmark Conservancy has closed this section of the trail and asks residents and visitors to use the reroute along Highway 13.

Please contact info@recreationandfitnessresources.org or 715-779-5408 with any questions.
Saturday
  • 5:30-6:30am - Race Day Packet Pickup at the Bayfield Rec Center. Race Day Packet Pickup will only be offered for special circumstances. Please contact Brittany at brittany@recreationandfitnessresources.org for approval.

  • 7am - Mandatory Safety Briefing and Swim Instructions - Washington Avenue Beach
  • 6:30am - First spectator ferry leaves for the island
  • 7:20am - Start of Race Waves TBD
  • 8:05am - Approximate arrival time of fastest swimmers

Free to swimmers (with ticket).  Open to the general public for a drop-in fee of $10
A limited number of yoga mats and props are available for use at Wild Rice Retreat.
Sunday
  • 10:00 - 11:00am - Post Race Vinyasa Yoga (an all levels class) at Wild Rice Retreat
Free to swimmers (with ticket). Open to the general public for a drop-in fee of $10
A limited number of yoga mats and props are available for use at Wild Rice Retreat.

Spectators

The swim course parallels the path of the Madeline Island Ferry for most of the 2.1 miles.

Spectators can watch the start of the race, then take the ferry over to the island and get a view of the race as it spreads out across the lake. The ferry landing dock on Madeline is about 3/4 miles from the finish.

Event organizers will offer bus transportation from the ferry dock to the finish line so that spectators can watch the end of the race, but we strongly encourage spectators to walk. Extremely fast swimmers (under 50:00) might actually beat the ferry over, we will do our best to get their friends and loved ones to the finish line in time to see them finish!

Get more information about information, prices, and schedules for the Madeline Island Ferry online or call 715-742-2051.

Race Postponement & Cancellation Policy

The Point to La Pointe Open Water Swim operates on a permit from the US Coast Guard. The safety of the swimmers and safety team is our top priority. For this reason, race organizers, in consultation with the US Coast Guard, will postpone or cancel the race under the following conditions:
  • Fog - the finish line must be visible to the naked eye from Bayfield.
  • Lightning – the race will not be started if there is visible lightening, audible thunder, or a weather radar showing a threatening system approaching the area.
  • Winds and Waves – the race will not be started if wave heights exceed 3’ on the course.
  • Race Organizers reserve the right to postpone, alter, or cancel the race for any reason.

If the race cannot start before 11am, it will be cancelled. Some conditions (strong winds or storms all day) may require outright cancellation. In the event of cancellation, no refunds will be issued.

If conditions become unsafe mid-race, swimmers will be pulled out of the water in accordance with the US Coast Guard approved safety plan.
